Power pumping not working?

You’ve heard power pumping is a great way to boost milk supply.

You diligently follow the schedule, but…

Nothing seems to be changing. That’s frustrating!

Before hitting the panic button, let’s explore why power pumping might not be working for you.

7 Reasons Why Power Pumping is Not Working

Let’s troubleshoot!

Reason #1: It’s All About the Timing

Those power pumping schedules you find online?

They’re guidelines, not a one-size-fits-all solution. Your body may have its own rhythm for milk release.

A strict “pump for X minutes, rest for Y minutes” schedule doesn’t work for everyone. Your body’s milk ejection reflex (let-down) may follow a different pattern.

Instead of forcing a rigid schedule, try this:

  • Pay attention to when you feel that “fullness” and your milk naturally starts flowing.
  • Pump during those times when output is likely to be highest.
  • Don’t stress about the clock – focus on getting the most milk out!

Reason #2: Pump Problems

Like your trusty car, breast pumps need maintenance!

Here’s the thing:

  • Pumps can lose suction over time, making it tough to empty your breasts fully.
  • The wrong flange size (those funnel-shaped things) can also mess with how much milk you pump.

The fix? Get your pump checked out.

A lactation consultant can make sure everything is working as it should and help you find the perfect flange fit.

Reason #3: Unrealistic Expectations

Pumping isn’t a magic wand. I know it’s tough, but try to be patient.

It often takes several days of consistent power pumping to see results. Don’t get discouraged after one session – keep at it!

Reason #4: The Stress Factor

Being a mom is stressful enough, and guess what?

Stress can absolutely tank your milk supply. If power pumping adds to that stress, it might do more harm than good.

What helps?

Sleep (ha!), drinking lots of water, and finding ways to chill out, even for just a few minutes.

Reason #5: Not Pumping Enough

If you’re power pumping to “catch up” on missed sessions, then you’re probably not pumping as often as you should.

And that cancels out the benefits of power pumping.

You can replace one or two sessions per day with a power pump, but be sure to still go with your 3-4 hourly pumps.

Reason #6: We’re All Different

Here’s the truth: Some bodies just don’t respond super well to power pumping. Don’t take it personally!

Experiment with different patterns or even try more frequent, shorter pumping sessions instead of marathon power pumps.

Reason #7: Could It Be Medical?

Sometimes, low supply isn’t about your pumping technique at all.

Conditions like thyroid problems, hormonal imbalances, or even bits of leftover placenta can mess with your milk production.

If you suspect something’s up, don’t hesitate – chat with your doctor.

Extra Tips:

  • The Pro-Power: Lactation consultants are your breastfeeding besties! They can help identify the root of the problem and tailor a plan specifically for you.
  • Eat, Drink, Be Merry (Well, Hydrated): Nourishing your body and staying hydrated are key for milk production.
  • Herbs to the Rescue? Ask your doctor about natural galactagogues (milk-boosting herbs) if you want to give them a try.

Key Takeaway

So, there you have it! We’ve explored some reasons why power pumping might not be working for you.

Remember, every breastfeeding journey is unique. Here’s a quick self-check before you move on:

  • Have you had your pump checked by a lactation consultant to ensure it’s working properly?
  • Are you prioritizing sleep, hydration, and healthy eating to fuel your body?
  • Have you tried different pumping schedules or techniques to see what works best for you?

If you’ve checked all the boxes and power pumping just isn’t giving you the results you need, don’t hesitate to reach out to your doctor or a lactation professional (like me!).

We can work together to create a personalized plan to address your specific needs and get your milk supply thriving.
